Microdochectomy

Microdochectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove a single milk duct from the breast, most often due to abnormal nipple discharge—especially if it is bloody or persistent. It is commonly used to treat benign ductal conditions such as intraductal papillomas, which are non-cancerous growths inside the milk ducts. The procedure involves making a small incision near the edge of the areola, identifying the affected duct, and removing it while preserving the rest of the breast tissue. The surgery is typically done under local or general anesthesia and is usually a day-care procedure. Recovery is generally quick, with mild discomfort and minimal scarring. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity for a few days and keep the area clean and dry. Pathological examination of the removed duct ensures that there are no signs of malignancy. Microdochectomy is a safe and effective treatment with a high success rate in resolving discharge and preventing recurrence, while maintaining the cosmetic appearance and function of the breast.
